Askable Adult

An adult who has the correct information and communication skills, along with an approachable personality, to encourage adolescents to talk openly about the following topics:

  • Puberty
  • Dating and relationships
  • Sex and sexuality
  • Contraceptives and access to contraceptives
  • Pregnancy
  • Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)
  • Sexual health
  • Adult/teen decision-making skills

An "Askable Adult" is NOT limited to only parents and/or guardians of an adolescent and may also include a number of other significant adults in their lives, such as relatives and non-related community members that are empowered to be appropriate role models for them.

Confidentiality

This means that ALL information obtained from community residents, whether it’s gotten from surveys or in Home Health Parties, is received in the strictest confidence, not to be shared with anyone at any time, without the residents’ permission. There will be more about confidentiality later in this training session.

Consensus Building

This means that a group of individuals, despite their different beliefs and attitudes, can find common ground on a particular subject - in this case, protecting their youth from unwanted pregnancies, STDs, and HIV/AIDS.

Consent

This means getting consent or permission from the respondents before conducting the survey.

Implementing Agency

This is the organization that is managing the Plain Talk site in the target community. In the case of Gainesville, Georgia, the implementing agency is the Georgia Coalition on Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention (G-CAPP). G-CAPP has an office in Gainesville-Hall County, the Gainesville Campaign Community (El Puente), which is located 50 miles northeast of Atlanta. El Puente serves as a bridge and resource center between the traditional African-American and white communities and the newly arrived Latinos.

Respondent

This is the adult or teen resident in the community to whom the survey questions are being addressed; they are sometimes called the survey participants.

Surveyor

Plain Talk Siler CityThis is what Plain Talk calls your job – someone who goes door-to-door asking neighborhood residents (including adults and teens) for their answers to specific questions on a survey (The Plain Talk Adult Survey and the Plain Talk Adolescent Survey). Occasionally, we will use the term interviewer instead of surveyor during this training session - these two terms are essentially the same thing.

Target Community

This is the area, community, or neighborhood that has been chosen to be part of the Plain Talk/Hablando Claro program. The target community is seen as one that needs the program because there are reported a large number of teen pregnancies and/or cases of sexually transmitted diseases there.
